Senior 'Sneak' Field Trip
Last Wednesday, the Seniors and their sponsors went on their Senior 'Sneak' trip. We started by eating breakfast at Tornado Alley before heading to Holdrege where we visited the Nebraska Prairie Museum before heading to Grand Island to the Trampoline Park. Of course, we had to eat an early dinner at Texas Roadhouse too before heading home!
Graduation is in 10 days and the Seniors have less than 1 week left of High School!
Excited to announce a great opportunity for our kids to take their skillset to the next level by bringing in one of the best basketball skill trainers in the Midwest, Shane Hennen! He's been a skills trainer for 7 years. You can check out his social media @hennen_workouts. This is for ALL girls and boys in grades 5th-8th of the 2023-24 school year. This will be a 2 day camp on June 16th & 17th. Forms have been sent home with the students. Any questions, please contact Coach Blackmore.
The Spanish play scheduled for Wednesday, May 3 has been moved to Monday, May 8. Starting time will be 9:00am.
Summer Boys Basketball Camp forms are being sent home. This is for boys currently in grades K-5.
Boys in 4th and 5th grades planning on attending both this camp and the Shane Hennen Camp June 16th & 17th can attend the Arapahoe Camp for free. *Make a note on the returned form.

Sloan Luna Portillo (7th Grade)
- A Life Taken Too Soon
Yesterday was a hard day at the school.
One of our former 7th-grade students, Sloan Luna Portillo, was killed in a multi-fatality accident at the Deerfield Corner intersection (Hwy 283/89) south of town that killed another occupant and left both her 11-year-old twin children in critical condition. Sloan's dad is also in critical condition.
All 3 kids were students at Arapahoe-Holbrook Public Schools up until Christmas this school year when they moved. They were moving back to the area when the wreck happened.
It's hard to try to explain to kids why things like this happen to good people, to young people with a full life yet to live. It was a heavy day at the school yesterday after hearing the news and processing the wide range of emotions that come along with tragic grief such as this.
Her classmates made several tributes that they signed and we hung them in Sloan's old locker where her Quiz Bowl name tag from this year was still hanging. We still had her computer bag and name tag so we put it in her locker as well. Next week we will put up some more recent photos included in this post and get some new flowers as well.
Classmates stayed after school on Friday to finish hanging things in her locker and reminisced and told stories and other fond memories of Sloan. It helped to start to process things and come to terms with the news.
But still, questions remained, why her? How do we move on from this? The only answer I could give was LIVE. Live life to the fullest and give it everything your best for HER. To honor her, to honor the memory of a child taken too soon. That's the way she would've wanted it.
Driver Arrested After Multi-Fatality Crash In Furnas County
Apr 27, 2023 / Nebraska State Patrol
https://statepatrol.nebraska.gov/driver-arrested-after-multi-fatality-crash-furnas-county
Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Washington man following a fatal crash in Furnas County, which claimed the lives of two people and critically injured three others.
At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, a Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling northbound on Highway 283. At that time, a Dodge Ram 3500 pulling an empty car trailer was traveling westbound on Highway 89, which has a stop sign at the Highway 283 intersection. The pickup ran the stop sign and struck the passenger side of the Hyundai.
One occupant of the Hyundai, an adult female, was pronounced deceased on scene. Four additional occupants of the Hyundai were transported to hospitals in critical condition. One of those patients, a female child, was flown by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and has since passed away.
The driver of the Hyundai and another female child were transported to Cambridge Memorial Hospital. The driver has since been flown to Bryan Health West Campus in Lincoln. A male child was transported to Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas and has since been flown to a hospital in Wichita. All three remain in critical condition. Names are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.
The two occupants of the Dodge were transported to Norton County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once released from the hospital, the driver of the Dodge, identified as Kyiaz Ulanov, 28, of Lynnwood, Washington, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide. He was lodged in Phelps County Jail.
The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction investigation.
From Sonia Diaz
I want to thank all of those that have been reaching out from the community to help these children and families from this horrible accident. I will be posting more information to be able to help on Monday. As of right now my priority is trying to be close to the twins and giving them all the love and support they need. Families have asked for me to get help with getting the remains back to their country which I will be on that sometime this coming week! This is a long process and I ask that you all please pray!
Thank you
Sloan a girl full of life, she had a long way to live. Her smile was always beautiful, when I found her I always told her I love your name and made her repeat her name several times. Pray for her father he is completely devastated admitted to hospital. Pray for your mom and your family, may God give you strength with the unfortunate loss. Only God knows why.
Paper Line Sculptures - K/1st Grade Art
The kids have been having fun doing all kinds of projects w/ Ms. Woosley this semester and it's been exciting to see what project she's going to hang up next!
For this project, students learned how to describe types of line. Some of the lines we learned are vertical, horizontal, diagonal, zig-zag, curved, and wavy! We looked at artist Alexander Calder as well.
